Lily

Breed : Weimaraner
Age: 7
Weight: 70 pounds
Temperament: Mild

Lily was given up for rescue by her owners in September, 2006 since they were moving and could not take her with them.  They had told us Lily got along wonderfully with their two very small children and other dog.  At the time they adopted Lily, they brought her inside where she wet the floor and chewed up a wallet the first few days, so they moved her outside.  Lily then lived outside for the next 1-1/2 years before being given up to rescue.  We have no information on her before that.

We brought Lily home to our kennel which is indoors and climate controlled.  The runs have a doggy door that leads to another outside kennel.  Lily has never messed her inside kennel but, for the first couple weeks, would use the outdoor portion.  After a lot of diligent daily scrubbing and consistent outside walks, she has stopped and it has been some time since she has had an "accident".  Lily has a clean bill of health from the veterinarian, and will soon go in for spaying

Lily currently shares space with an older year old neutered Springer and they get along great!  She also sees many dogs come and go from the kennel and has never showed any aggression as they pass by her kennel.  She did not react well with our younger Weimaraner who has a very playful manner and blind sided her one evening on a late night walk.  So, we believe she would do well with older dogs, but may not do so well with younger ones.  Lily is playful with us when enticed to do so.  Other than that, she is very laid back, does not jump and likes to snuggle into her big fluffy bed.  She also is very good with our 9 year old daughter.

Lily is a typical Weimaraner that likes her people.  Although the previous owners told us she may be shy toward men, we have not seen that since I have been her primary caretaker and she has been very receptive to me.  We were also informed that she likes to bark.  She does bark on occasion when we leave but it has become more infrequent with her learning our routine.  But as with most Weimaraners, as long as she sees us around she is quite content to sit or lay in her pen and watch us.  We also try to keep her busy when we are not there with a variety of chew toys, bones and treats.  Also, being a Weim, she likes to dig and is good at it.  She doesn't do it in clear view though - only when you walk away and leave her for a minute (or two).

Lily's requirements are an indoor home and a dog bed next to yours.  She may need the occasional middle of the night walk and some constant supervision initially to save that special shoe, but we would see this as very short term.  Although we have not crated her yet, when not around we would recommend that it would be best to kennel her in some way. We think she would adopt quickly to a new routine as most dogs do.  A fenced yard would be best but she does great on a leash, doesn't pull and actually performs her duty more quickly that way.
