| Canine Distemper The Canine distemper Virus (CDV) can
be found in domestic dogs and other wildlife such as raccoons, skunks
and foxes. Although a common infection in dogs many years ago, this
virus has been significantly reduced through the wide spread vaccination
of dogs.
Prevention starts with puppies when they receive a series of
vaccinations that are spread over several weeks. Once the series is
complete, vaccinations are then given annually to maintain immunity.
Initial signs of this disease can include discharge from the eyes or
nose, mild cough and lethargy. Other symptoms may include, but are not
limited to: weakness, diarrhea, dehydration, seizures, loss of
coordination, vomiting. This disease carries a high mortality rate
(more than 50% who contract it die), and dogs that do survive generally
have a damaged and irreparable nervous system and may have paralysis or
suffer from seizures.
Rule of thumb: Keep puppies away from places and unvaccinated dogs
where they may come in contact with the virus until he is vaccinated. |
